Mumbai is the destination capital for many new faces who wants to rock the world in entertainment industry name as Bollywood. But do we know how the name Mumbai came up or why this place is called as Mumbai?Its been said the name Mumbai is derived from Mumba or Maha-Amba. Maha-Amba is the name of the Hindu goddess Mumbadevi which holds an important place in all religious books too. Aai- is the name of mother which is called in Marathi. If we look back into History then in the sixteen century when the Portuguese landed on this area they call this place Mumbai by various name and at the end it was called as Bombaim which we can still find as a common name in the current Portuguese history.
After Portuguese in the seventeen century when the British gained possession it was angilicsed to Bombay though it was know as Mumbai or Mambai to Marathi and the Gujarati speaking people staying in Mumbai is those era. Also Mumbai was known as Bambai in Hindi or Urdu speaking folk. This went for till times in the Year 1995v it was officially declared to the Marathi pronunciation of Mumbai and form then Mumbai is the name afflicted to the city of Mumbai.
There are also a wide spread explanation of the city Mumbai, Mabbai, Bambai, Bombay..etc. Whatever be the history for the name of Mumbai its our lovable city and we proudly call it our Mumbai.
