The Fungi World (236) : Wolf’s Milk

Wolf’s Milk is not really 100% a fungus, but a slime mould that can occur on damp rotten wood from late spring till autumn, especially on large logs in shady forest areas.

Its fruiting body appears as small bulbous ‘candies’ (only 0,5 to 1 cm. in diameter) that are creeping across the dead wood at the speed of as much as 2,5 cm. per hour, meanwhile growing, eating,…….

A bit mysterious creature.
In ancient times, it was believed there was a werewolf in the neighbourhood when this fungus was found (hence its English name).

Dutch name : Bloedweizwam
German name : Blutmilchpilz
Latin name : Lycogala epidendrum
