The Gypsy Girls

The best of friends in the gypsy camp. There is a kind of swag between them. Like blood sisters that have a different view on life that keeps them from assembling into society. Community is tough, and complex with the camps. A woman is the property of her man. At the age of 14 they are married off. Fall out of line and you get roughed up. Abuse seems to end and life moves on with a little support from a girlfriend that cares and have traveled the same road before her. Everything they do is for the success of the camp, the people in their society. There is no wish to be part the dominate civilization.

In Greece we also have big gypsy soceites that live in their own camps under their own laws that quite often exert the limits of legacy. For example, incidents of revenge for love or honor matters.
Great photo, very expressive faces with evident traces of their everyday experiences....

when i was little, my parents used to own a picture book with child pictures by famous photographers. i loved that book! but it had pages that i avoided because they made me feel uneasy: a smoking toddler, children with wild and raw looks, poor children sleeping in the street, desperate beggars with violence in their eyes… today i know those were probably the best images in the book because they succeeded in moving, holding up mirros, provoking strong emotional responses. had your two gypsy girls appeared in that book, as a child, i would have tried to skip the page because they would have made mee feel uneasy: the the bloodshot eyes, the rawness of their look, the boredom, the way they bruised and bruise themselves on life, their "apartness", their confident "i-don't-give-a-damn-and-what-are-you-looking-at" attitude, and the twinge of envy i feel at their fire-forged friendship. as far as life is concerned, they've definitely learned to "surf with the intrepid crew". greetings, sabine.

Beautiful faces ... gold jewelery ... bruises on the face and the scars from the beatings on the body ...
In whatever country Roma may live - Italy, Russia, Poland, Lithuania - they live by their own laws and traditions ...
    Regards
    Tania

Thank you for your pictures und descriptions, Glenn!
They let me catch a glimpse to foreign worlds - some appalling, but all manlike (this one even in both meanings of this word).
