The Living Forest (107) : Horsetail
In the forest wild flowers, plants, herbs and ferns have started growing again.
This leafless stalk is the early spring stage of the Horsetail (reduced leaves will appear later on).
In fact, Horsetail is the only (!) surviving genus of the entire class Equisetopsida, which for over one hundred million years was very diverse and dominated the forests all over the world with some large trees reaching to 30 m tall.
Dutch name : Heermoes (syn. Akkerpaardestaart)
German name : Acker-Schachtelhalm
Latin name : Equisetum arvense

Der Ackerschachtelhalm (weiß nicht, ob es sie hier um den Wald- oder Ackerschachtelhalm handelt.. - benannt hast Du ja den Ackerschachtelhalm...) ist ein ganz bedeutendes Heilkräutlein. Es wurde schon in der Antike und auch viel später bei Pfarrer Kneipp eingesetzt. Der hohe Gehalt an Kieselsäure macht ihn auch heute noch interessant.....
Die Form seiner Triebe direkt nach dem Austrieb ist höchst eigenartig und später erinnert der Wuchs dann fast ein wenig an ein Nedelgehölz im Kleinen...

what bizarre-looking plants! they remind me just a little of those "tiny versions" of vegetable – corn or asparagus – sometimes served for snacks at parties. a beautiful shot, mark! amazing details in their pretty "bamboo-like" stems! and very interesting stuff to go with it, too: a "last-of-the-mohicans plant", so to say ; ))! i'm picturing its extinct ancestors right now: those giants must have been an imposing sight! greetings, sabine.Josef Kainz 27/04/2010 9:06
