The Living Forest (112) : Devil’s-bit Scabious

This striking wild flower likes to grow on moist soil in damp forests, lowland heath and marshy areas.

In medieval times this species was used to treat Scabies and other afflictions of the skin including sores caused by the Bubonic Plague.

The roots of this plant stop abruptly as if they have been bitten off.
Medieval people believed it was bitten off by the devil, angry at the plant’s ability to cure (hence its name).

Dutch name : Blauwe Knoop
German name : Teufelsabbiss
Latin name : Succisa pratensis (syn. Scabiosa succisa)
