The Living Forest (242) : Black Nightshade

Black Nightshade is a herb mostly found in wooded areas.

The plant is dressed with tiny lovely flowers in spring (see picture) and adorned with bunches of black berries in autumn.

The berries of the Black Nightshade are edible (and quite delicious) if ripe but can easily be confused with the extremely toxic and potentially fatal berries of his brother, the Deadly Nightshade (Atropa belladonna) !

Dutch name : Zwarte nachtschade
German name : Schwarzer Nachtschatten
Latin name : Solanum nigrum

PS : Also the tomato and potato belong to the genus Solanum.
If you look closely at tomato or potato flowers, you will see a very close relationship in appearance with the Black Nightshade flowers.
