The Living Forest (360) : Star Magnolia

Star magnolia is a large shrub or small deciduous tree (native to Japan) that was introduced in European gardens at the end of the 19th century.

It bears large, showy white flowers in early spring, before its leaves open.

I spotted this very beautiful specimen at the edge of a forest, very likely as a result of seeds transported by the wind, decades ago (that’s why I placed this picture in my series of ‘The Living Forest’)

Dutch name : Stermagnolia
German name : Stern-Magnolie
Latin name : Magnolia stellata

Bottom right in my picture you can see a macro detail of the flower.
