The Living Forest (373) : Bee Wolf

The bee wolf is a beetle that is quite rare in Belgium. It got its name because it breeds in the nests of bees.

During the larval stage, these beetles are parasites of bees, as the adults lay their eggs in the nests of solitary bees or hives of honey bees, eating the larvae and nymphs of their victims (good to know that this is generally not harmful to beekeeping).

Dutch name : Bijenwolf
German name : Gemeiner Bienenkäfer (auch Immenkäfer, Immenwolf oder Bienenwolf genannt)
Latin name : Trichodes apiarius
