The Living Forest (415) : European Mouflon

The mouflon is a species of wild sheep and was originally roaming the highlands of central Asia.

Thousands of years ago, they were successfully introduced by man all over Europe.
This animal however was hunted so heavily that the species was almost completely extinct in Europe in the 17th century!

In the 18th century and in the sixties of last century, a re-introduction took place in several European countries.

Dutch name : Europese Moeflon
German name : Europäischer Mufflon
Latin name : Ovis orientalis musimon

Location : National Park of Membre-Bohan (Belgium), close to the border with France.
The mouflon is very rarely spotted in Belgian forests, so it was a lucky encounter.
