The Living Forest (518) : Brown Marmorated Stink Bug

The brown marmorated stink bug is an insect native to China, Japan, the Korean peninsula and Taiwan.

Like all stink bugs, this insect has the ability to emit a disgusting odor through holes in its abdomen as a defense mechanism meant to prevent it from being eaten by birds and lizards.

The brown marmorated stink bug was likely first introduced to Europe during the repair work of the Chinese Garden in Zürich, Switzerland in the winter of 1998 by roof tiles that were imported from China.

The bug has since then spread rapidly through Europe. But unfortunately, it became an agricultural pest that cause widespread damage to fruit and vegetable crops.

Dutch name : Bruingemarmerde stinkwants
German name : Marmorierte Baumwanze
Latin name : Halyomorpha halys
