The Living Forest (768) : Red Deer

In september and october, red deer start looking for a mate. For males, this is always accompanied by a lot of noise.

Testosterone courses through their bodies, their swollen throats and large antlers give them an imposing appearance.

By roaring, they impress each other and the females. This can be heard for miles around in the forest.

Sometimes they use their impressive antlers to pick fights with rivals.

Dutch name : Edelhert
German name : Rothirsch
Latin name : Cervus elaphus

Location : Hertogenwald at Eupen (Belgium)
