The Middle Ages (40) : Musician

This series is an attempt to illustrate how life was going on in the Middle Ages.

A bagpipe was one of the most popular instruments among musicians in medieval times.

Did you know that the origins of the bagpipe can be traced back to the most ancient civilizations.
It was probably made for the first time around 1000 BC by herdsmen in southern Mesopotamia (now Iraq), who had the necessary materials at hand : a goat or sheep skin and a reed pipe.

Photographed at medieval festival of castle Franchimont (Belgium).
