The Middle Ages (65) : Princess

This series is an attempt to illustrate how life was going on in the Middle Ages.

The life of a medieval princess is often romanticized in contemporary thought with an impression of pretty and happy fairy tales.
But, in reality, a (beautiful) princess was often used as a political pawn to gain more power and forge alliances with other countries.

From childhood on, many girls were promised to foreign Kings and numerous marriages occurred already before the princess reached her teenage years.
The young women were uprooted from their home and sent throughout Europe to get married, often to see their native land never again.

Photographed at medieval festival of castle Franchimont (Belgium).
