The Middle Ages (81) : Hurdy-gurdy player

This series is an attempt to illustrate how life was going on in the Middle Ages.

My shot shows a musician playing the hurdy-gurdy.

The hurdy-gurdy is a stringed instrument, invented in the 11th century, that produces sound by a crank-turned wheel rubbing against the strings.
Melodies are played on a keyboard that presses tangents against one or more of the strings to change their pitch.

Photographed at medieval festival of castle Reinhardstein (Robertville, Belgium).
