There are the elephants!

Eine gute halbe Stunde später war es dann so weit: die ersten Elefanten zum Greifen nahe. Der Nationalpark grenzt an Mozambique, das von 1977–1992 einen brutalen Bürgerkrieg erlebt hat. Deshalb gab es hier jede Menge Wilderei. Es gab in den 1970ern auch Massenabschlachtungen seitens der Regierung von Zimbabwe. Weil die Dickhäuter sich noch daran erinnern, sind sie hier etwas nervöser und manchmal aggressiver als anderswo.

Half an hour later we had the first close encounter with elephants. The National Park borders on Mozambique, where a brutal civil war raged from 1977–1992. There was a lot of poaching. Also, in the 1970s the Zimbabwean government ordered the culling of thousands of elephants. The animals still remember this, which is why they are a bit more skittish and even aggressive than elsewhere.
