Update: neue Lyssomanes-Art (Costa Rica)

Nachdem ich die Spinne* einem Arachnologen und Taxonomen an der Universidad Nacional de Columbia, Laboratorio de Aracnología & Miriapodología, im Bild vorgestellt hatte, kam prompt die Ferndiagnose: Derzeit ist unter den ca. 100 Lyssomanes-Arten keine bekannt, bei der die Männchen über eine Tibialapophyse verfügen. Das ist der kleine ab- und seitwärts gerichtete Dorn oberhalb des verdickten Bulbus des Tasters. Er schließt mit den Worten: „I think, this is a new species“.
Eine weitere Diagnose ist derzeit natürlich nicht möglich, da ich – meinem Credo folgend – die Tiere nur lebend fotografiere und sie auch nicht töten möchte, sie also nicht mitgenommen habe, was aber für eine wissenschaftliche Diagnose unabdingbar ist. Für die nächste Reise werde ich mir ernsthaft Gedanken machen müssen, ob und wie weit ich über meinen Schatten springen kann.
Eine große Überraschung ist seine Nachricht freilich nicht. Er selbst hat allein für Kolumbien über 20 neue Arten beschrieben, in den tropischen Regenwäldern muss man immer mit solchen Unbekannten rechnen. Gerade bei den Springspinnen, einer der größten Spinnenfamilien, darf noch viel erwartet werden …

After presenting a picture of the spider* to an arachnologist and a taxonomist at the Universidad Nacional de Columbia, Laboratorio de Aracnología & Miriapodología, I promptly received a remote diagnosis: Out of the about 100 species of Lyssomanes, there is not one male known of, that has ever been spotted with such a tibial apophysis. The tibial apophysis is the down and sideway facing thorn which can be seen above the thickened bulb of the spider’s bulbus. The arachnologist finished with the words: “I think, this is a new species.”
As of now, a further diagnosis is not possible. Out of conviction, I only take pictures of living animals. In order to scientifically define the species any further, I would have had to take it with me, which indispensably would have led to the death of the spider. For my next trip, I have to give serious thought in to adjusting those convictions.
Nevertheless it definitely did not come as a surprise, that the arachnologist believes we discovered a new species. He himself has described over 20 new species only for Columbia. Exploring tropical rainforests, one always has to expect to discover unknown creatures. Especially when it comes to jumping spiders as one of the largest families, there is a lot more to expect …
