Wéris, the Belgian Stonehenge (3)

Wéris is a megalithic site in the south of Belgium and is known as the ‘Belgian Stonehenge’.

Of course it can not really be compared to with the very impressive Stonehenge monument in the UK, but there are quite some many interesting prehistoric relics, graves and monuments to be seen.

Scientists even think that, in the prehistorical Bronze Age, Wéris might well has been one of the most important megalithic centers on the European continent.

This is the Northern Dolmen, a megalithic gallery-tomb that dates from around 3000 years BC (the world famous Stonehenge monument dates from 2300 years BC)

The 6 meters long dolmen is covered by a massive (broken) capstone, that is estimated to weigh 30 tons and supported by stones that weigh some 18 and 20 tons each.
All stones are made out of puddingstone.

The dolmen was originally covered by a tumulus.
During the excavations in 1888, 3 human skeletons, flints, stone arrows and pottery fragments were found.
