Homeward Bound

It's a bit past 6:30 on an evening in late spring, as this Virginia Railway Express
Fredericksburg Line commuter train calls at the Franconia Springfield Station.

The train is made up of Sumitomo Gallery IV bilevel coaches, with an MP 36PH-3C
diesel-electric locomotive upfront. The last passengers for Franconia-Springfield have
detrained and a VRE conductor gets ready to button up his carriage so the train can
continue its late afternoon journey from Washington, D.C. to Spotsylvania, Virginia.

The overbridge, spanning the CSX mainline, connects the VRE platforms to the multimodal station in
Fairfax County, which also serves the Blue Line of the Washington MetroRail rapid transit system,
as well as regional and long-distance buses.
