      Yes, agree. Schooling in Mathematics or Geography for example may have some value in the employment market even if, according to a NZ review, 65% of school Maths is never used outside the school gate. The essence of education is at least twofold: Helping the student become the best he/she can become, academically, socially, in the sports arena... and 'giving them wings to become masters of themselves.'
      The major problem is that most teachers are information transmitters rather than 'educators' in the sense I suggest. The solution is choose a different quality of candidate for teacher training. I could make a long list of required attributes :-)
