A Meet of M8s - A New Haven Line Moment

New Haven Line M8 EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) trains occupy the outer local tracks at the
Westport, Connecticut Metro North Station, on this perfect autumn afternoon in late October.

The New Haven-bound train at left is about to cross the Saugatuck River Bridge, while the one on the right
is arriving at the station to serve passengers heading for Grand Central Terminal or other points west of here.

These handsome and high-stepping Kawasaki M8s are unique in Metro North's EMU fleet in that they are dual mode, operating on third-rail DC between Grand Central Terminal and Pelham in Westchester County, switching on the fly to high-voltage AC as they raise their pantographs to meet the overhead catenary, without missing a beat.

Recently, the domain of the M8 Trains (but under the CT Rail banner) has been extended beyond
New Haven (the eastern end of Metro North) to Shore Line East destinations farther into southern Connecticut.
