Along the Old Main No.10 - Almost Our Turn
The historic Old Main Line, built by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad between Relay and Point of Rocks, Maryland, is a single-track line through the craggy and forested Patapsco Valley, with a number of passing sidings to allow trains to operate in both directions. At one such siding, at Gun Road, at a break in the forest on an inviting afternoon in late spring, four heavy GE diesel-electric locomotives idle at the head of their eastbound freight consist as they await the passage of a westbound train so they can proceed toward Baltimore. They'll not have much longer to wait, as the green signal has just lighted, also letting a patient train photographer know the "meet" is imminent.
