Canton No. 2 - Comfort Food 24/7
The Sip & Bite Restaurant in Baltimore's Canton neighborhood.
An unpretentious family run place, serving "comfort food" (including
their signature crab cakes and Greek specialties) 24/7 since 1948.
Having grown up in Baltimore, I do love this quote from the history page of the restaurant's web site:
"How it got its name has been lost in the Formstone mists of Canton. Opened in 1948, the Sip & Bite
became a word-of-mouth sensation after [owner] George Vasiliades began ladling out homemade
specials to waterfront regulars who knew the value of a buck and the taste of real food."
If you're wondering about that "Formstone mists" reference, Formstone was a faux stone covering
that many Baltimore homeowners applied to the old bricks of their row houses in the mid-20th century.
It can be seen above the Sip & Bite's facade.
The mists? No, Formstone emits no mists I'm aware of, so I suppose
they just drifted in from Baltimore's broad harbor, which Canton flanks ;-)
The (almost) black and white treatment was created from an original Ektachrome.

In comparison with the night shot it looks somewhat, hm -, sober here.Unpretentious, you name it, but that doesn´t mean a thing as to food quality, as we know!
Interesting explanation of where the formstone-saying comes from!
