CHARMING CHAM POTTER

This photo was taken in the village (Bau Truc) a few kilometres north of Mui Ne along the South China Sea. The young woman is a potter. She’s posing among some of the pots in the dark showroom.

The clay comes from the banks of the Quao River nearby and is mixed with fine clean sand. It is very flexible and is placed on an anvil or a big jar turned upside down as the Cham potters shape their wares by hand rather than using a wheel; the potter turns around the pot to shape it

When a pot is finished shaping, it’s left to dry and one of the other potters in the workshop will put the finishing touch using some rudimentary tools. Each decoration and pattern is unique to the Cham people and follows a long tradition passed down from one generation to the next.
