Common Lilac is a popular ornamental shrub or small tree in gardens, because of the attractive, sweet smell of its flowers.

The plant is native to the Balkan Peninsula in south-eastern Europe, where it grows on rocky hills and was introduced into European gardens at the end of the 16th century.
