Gantry Crane in Golden Hour - A Vancouver Harbour Impression
A 25-year-old (but still fond and vivid) memory of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
It was early September 1999 and every day of my weeklong visit was blessed with brilliant Pacific
Northwest sunshine (not always a given!). On this particular afternoon, the golden hours were spent
along the harbor. Between Seabus (*) ferry traffic between Vancouver and North Vancouver and
departing and arriving helicopters, (**) there were many motifs to shoot, including this imposing gantry crane.
I was particularly attracted to its vivid red form, accented by those bright yellow stairways and other
details, especially in how it boldly stood out from the forested mountain rising beyond the residences
on the North Vancouver shoreline.
The scene was captured on Ektachrome EL-400 slide film through a 75-300mm
lens on my (still trusty) Canon EOS-1. It makes its first appearance this week.
