* Illuminated clock -faced tide gauge *

This historic tide clock, which has recently been salvaged and restored, originally stood out in shallow water and acted as a tide gauge to show approaching sailing ships the depth of water so they wouldn't run aground. It is believed to be the only one in existence, and now stands near the jetty at Port Germein in South Australia. It originally stood out at sea with its backlit clock-style face illuminated by oil or gas lighting. A series of levers and pulleys on the side of its wooden stand, which was much higher than that on which the restored device currently sits, rose and fell with the tide, and as they did so, a chain mechanism inside the main structure turned the hand so that it pointed to the depth measurement. It is believed that this was the only gauge of its type other than one in Tasmania, and which no longer exists. It was believed to have been built in the first years of the 19th century.
