My hometown: Old town…

… in snowy cloudy morning

Sisak fortress, today known as the Old town, whose construction began the 1544th for the purpose of defense of the Croatian Kingdom, is one of the most precious cultural properties in Croatia. It is also one of the most famous military fortifications in Europe, and its appearance in the form of a triangle with three towers delights residents and visitors to the city.

Thick walls, that are built of bricks from the ruins of Roman Siscia, were further protected by wooden palisades and earthen walls, between the rivers Sava and Kupa ditch was dug, and the fort was on the island that could be reached only by a wooden bridge. Sava and Kupa River flowed directly along walls of the fort and near was the estuary of these two rivers. From 16 century to the present days estuary of the Kupa and Sava moved to 1555 meters downstream from the fort, because the rivers meandered and inflicted material.

All visitors to the Old Town must know that here you will not find a wealth and grandeur. Through corridors and stairways of the Old Town are not walked ladies in crinolines, court jesters and jokers. Here rules the knights and warriors, under the walls of this city blood had flowed in streams. Everything was subordinated to a military role, protection from Turks of the population marketplaces that are before the Turkish invasions, sought shelter within the walls of the fortress.

Here on 22 June 1593rd the famous BATTLE AT SISAK took place, in which the few in number Croatian army defeated the numerically superior Turkish army and prevent further Turkish advance into Europe.
