On hike through the snowy swamp (5)

Winter was here with bitter cold temperatures far below zero, a biting northeastern wind, not much snow (but better than nothing) and sunny conditions.
Perfect weather for me to make a hike.

This landscape shot shows the snow covered swampy peat moors of ‘Hohes Venn’.
‘Hohes Venn’ is the greatest (4500 ha) and oldest National Park of Belgium and the most unique nature biotope in the land.
The whole area is vast and desolate. It consists mainly of swamps which can only be traversed by using the wooden paths that were made by the local foresters.

+++

On this last picture of my ‘snowy swamp series’, one can see 2 wooden drainage ditches (used to transport excess water to drier parts of the area) that were totally frozen in the middle of the swamp.

Location : Brackvenn (-15°)
