India. Varanasi(Benares).Maybe the most fascinating place in India. Benares is one of the oldest cities in India. It's the Holy city. The dreaming destination of every Indian, longing for, at least once in his life, to visit this place and bath in the sacred waters of river Gange. The city that can hardly accomodate it's own population, is always overcrowded by millions of Indians wanting to fulfill their pilgrimage. From four o clock in the morning a terrific mob of cars, carts, people, beggars, street merchants, cows even.. monkeys starts moving towards the shore where the bathing takes place and also the ritual of burning the deads.
The photo. Maybe the proffession is overloaded but remains open and free. Here in Greece we are struggling to keep certain proffessions closed by law(!) to keep profit high!!..

I immediately knew it was Varanasi - a sad but typical scene .... where there are believers, there will be beggars to remind them of their conscience - if not human duty ... your image is well composed and showing all the different faces well - the little boy eating his bread a special eyecatcher !!!
    greetings, Adele

You composed this shot perfectly Alexander, with the eye being taken up the steps past all the people. A country I have been lucky enough to visit twice, and left with wonderful memories.
    best wishes,
    Lawson

SO many men waiting for someone to drop money into their pots.....and all so very patient.
    Excellent work.

format and content of the image in perfect accord! it's a literal "pilgrimage" up the stairs for our viewers' eager eyes! and for the real pilgrims – no matter how cynical this may sound – it must be a matter of "supply and demand": lots of beggars profit from lots of people's need to do good and donate alms to the poor! greetings, sabine. p.s.: the eye-contact with the eating boy – yes, it's my favorite detail, too!
