The valley of Meteora
Central Greece Thessaly The Meteora valley.
Another panoramic and yet partial view of the valley where the Meteora rocks are. The valley is also called "The Thessalian Fields" one of the most glamorous sites in Greek mythology, a place that gave many gallant heroes and great wariors. Yet, the place became famous when, in the Byzantine era, emperors built the monasteries on top of the high rocks and the whole area became a Holy Site like that of Mount Athos.During that period the monasteries thrived and were loaded with frescoes and mosaics. In the photo only part of the valley can be seen.

AT first glance this looks like a picture of large boulders....until you see the tiny buildings on the tops of these huge outcrops of rock.A truly amazing view of this almost luna landscape.

i agree with tania skaradek: it's such a strange and surreal sight that one automatically places it somewhere else, on a distant planet outside this world… monasteries on giant rocks – closer to god, yes! but i can't help but also think of hybris, the tower of babel and its disastrous conesquences. as most superheros probably know, there's only a thin line between divine devotion and megalomanic ambition… ; ) a spectacular site and image of it, alexander! greetings, sabine.Harold Thompson 15/11/2013 9:14
Nicely composed using the gap in the cliffs to lead you through to the valley overlooked by the monasteries. Good depth to the scene and strong range of tones:-)) Harold
