Scooting over the Saugatuck - A Northeast Corridor Moment
As a Metro North New Haven Line train of Kawasaki M8 railcars glides out of Westport Station, an
eastbound Acela, ,Amtrak's premium high-speed service, bound for Boston sweeps by on one of
the inner express tracks along this four-track Northeast Corridor mainline.
Normally, such a moment might be expected to represent the high-speed Acela trainset as an ill-
defined blur, but due to reduced speed requirements on the Saugatuck River Bridge, I was able to
catch it unblurred as it overtook the New Haven bound M8 train.
The M8 trainsets are special in that they are designed to operate on third-rail direct current as well as high-voltage AC from overhead catenary. Thus, such trains, dedicated to New Haven Line service, depart New York's Grand Central Terminal via third rail pickup for the initial leg of their Connecticut journey, but make the power change, "on the fly" at Pelham in Westchester County, where the pantographs rise to meet the overhead high-voltage AC supplied by catenary for the rest of their journey to New Haven.
