The Fungi World (275) : Tubifera ferruginosa

Tubifera ferruginosa is not really 100% a fungus, but a spongy slime mould that can occur on damp rotten wood from late summer till autumn, especially on large logs in shady forest areas.

Its fruiting body appears as small cushion-like blobs (only 0,5 to 1cm. in diameter) that are creeping across the dead wood at the speed of as much as 2,5 cm. per hour, meanwhile growing, eating,…….

A bit mysterious creature.
In ancient times, it was believed there was a werewolf in the neighbourhood when this slime mould was found…..

There exists no English name for this species.

Dutch name : Rossig buiskussen
German name : Lachsfarbene Schleimpilz
Latin name : Tubifera ferruginosa
