Tree Sulpture (The Upper Room) Durham City.
This multiple tree sculpture of the scene of The Last Supper was on the banks of the River Wear, below Durham Cathedral. It was viewed by sitting in a seat cut in a large tree at the head of the group. My original caption said it was damaged by an arson attack, I was misinformed. It actually succumed to rot and became a public danger (it was constructed from 13 diseased Elm trees with a limited life expectancy). An appeal to replace the sculpture with a more durable piece was unsuccesful and the artist, Colin Wilbourne, carried out the demolition, himself, on 1st February 2001.

A work of genius which I saw many times. Its loss is a tragedy. The proposal to remove it and the attempt to raise funds to replace it were not well-publicised - I certainly heard nothing. Is there any possibility of resurrecting the proposal? Bob Elston.John Bennett 20/01/2007 11:58
