The beach at Blackhall Rocks.
The beach below Blackhall Rocks on the Durham Coast. Where the bracing North Sea air mingles with the heady aroma from the lagoon of untreated sewage, the outflow cutting a channel across the (black) golden sands as it foams into the sea. Industry ravaged the North-East coast of England for centuries and left this legacy - a lunar wasteland. This picture dates from the early 1990's. You wouldn't believe it now!

Mostly. But also added to by the steel and chemical industry. There seemed to be layers akin rock strata with varying content behind the coal waste seen here! But as Bryan says, it's all now an unpleasant memory.John Bennett 20/01/2007 11:52
