A Hint of Winter on the Rhätische Bahn
Well, almost a winter scene as this Rhätische Bahn Regio Express approaches its destination, Disentis/Mustér, but it was actually
taken on a photo-perfect early October day, after higher elevations in Switzerland’s Canton Graubünden received an overnight snowfall.
Guess it will have to do, until I make a return visit to ride the RhB in “genuine” Alpine winter!
On this trip, in 2011, I was re-tracing most of my first ride on the Glacier Express back in 1989, but in the opposite direction (and not entirely
on the GEX!). The luxury, climatization, and panoramic windows are nice, of course, and I’ll be boarding the modern GEX at Disentis; but for
a photographer, nothing has quite the magic of a “traditional” RhB train with windows you can open and stick a camera or three out of ;-)
This photo was made from the rear of such a train. Fortunately, the RhB operates long trains on this route, allowing
one to capture the sweep of the train as well as the scenery. Above the train rises the Benedictine Monastery at Disentis.
This image is available in archival gallery prints and as a custom printed Photo Note Card.
It is also included in my 2013 Trains Calendar “Chuff, Hummm, and Rumble-Grumble.
