Chase Grocery

A timeless looking grocery store in Chase, British Columbia, Canada.

At least it looked timeless when I visited in 1999 ;-)

Hence, this toned black and white treatment from
the original Ektachrome EBX-100 transparency.

you know what my first thought was when i spotted this on the fc title page? it made me think of one of my favorite 60s comedies: "man's favorite sport?" starring rock hudson and paula prentiss. don't know exactly why… something about her posh poised glitzy pose… she seems strangely out of place, way too glamorous for a grocery store, or in other words – and to remain within angler vernacular ; ) –, she's a fish out the water! ; )) and one her husband is mighty proud of – and rightfully so! timeless indeed and maybe even a bit nostalgic… beautifully captured ; ) and portrayed, steve! greetings, sabine.

That´s a really appealing photo, Steve.
Its technical and photographic quality is worth being mentioned. But then, it is the documentary value I appreciate so much. Looking at it more closely, one notices that the photo – despite its contemporary and timeless looking way – easily can be recognized as a memento of a long gone time. The enthralling parts of your motif are its antipodes: contemporary, timeless and modern looking versus being indeed a contemporary witness of a spirit of another time.
1999 – at that time in Germany still countless numbers of small cigar shops could be found. Obviously, the same applied to Canada or at least to Chase. Those small cigar shops in Germany had specialized in the sale of cigars, cigarettes, pipes & tobacco. The extended sales area for cigarettes in that small grocery shop is easily to be recognized, too.
Because of changes in laws and in human behavior these shops nowadays almost completely have disappeared. I suspect, Canada isn´t in a different way from Germany. Thus, if one carefully looks, your photo recollects a time, when smoking was omnipresent in every aspect of daily life. "Smoking" stood for the spirit of that time and it expressed the coolness and the easygoing lifestyle of that decade.
Personally, I love contemporary documents whose details tell so much about our (almost forgotten) past ....
