Interlaken Ost
It actually took five visits before I was to see the front of this inviting railway station at the east end of Interlaken
in the Berner Alps. The reasons are easy enough to understand (especially if one is a train-lover!).
Interlaken-Ost is a lively nexus of Swiss mainline trains, German ICE’s, and
meandering narrow gauge trains that fan out to any number of high altitude destinations.
So, the temptation is always to linger awhile trackside with the cameras.
Also, close by the long-distance mainline tracks (those farthest from the station building) is the cozy Hotel du Lac,
and the Aare River, which passes through Interlaken and connects Lake Thun with Lake Brienz.
But Interlaken-Ost is also, in true Swiss fashion, a place where PostAuto (postal bus) service
efficiently connects with the trains to give access to destinations not served by rail.
And, on this lovely day in October 2011, my destination was the village of Iseltwald on Lake Brienz,
for some late afternoon photography, and a relaxing dinner on the terrace of the Strandhotel,
overlooking the lake, on this last day of a sunny sojourn in the Berner Oberland.
Iseltwald is reached by post buses that depart from the front plaza of the station.
Arriving early, there was ample time to enjoy and photograph the inviting plaza.
