On the Chesapeake, No.1 - Sailboat and Bridge Towers

On a perfect sunny afternoon in early autumn, a sailboat navigates the waters
of the Chesapeake Bay by the towering twin spans of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

The two spans connect the Western Shore of Maryland at Annapolis, the state capital, with the Eastern Shore at Stevensville on Kent Island in Queen Anne's County across this broad body of water leading out to the Atlantic Ocean. The first span opened in 1952; it was joined by the parallel span in 1973, providing the flexibility of five reversible lanes.

The center spans are tall enough for oceangoing ships originating at, or heading for, the Port of
Baltimore (*) to pass under them as they navigate the Chesapeake Bay's shipping channels.
