Smiling Diesels

Sometimes, diesels smile, even when growling under heavy loads...

Let's call this: one from the "Fallen Flags" scrapbook...

It is early evening in Alexandria, Virginia, as this Richmond Fredericksburg and Potomac
freight train, its four unit power led by EMD GP-40 No.125, approaches Union Station,.

The RF&P had the slogan "Linking North and South." Its 113 miles of track from Richmond to Washington, D.C.
carried both passenger and freight trains for many railroads, including the many famous (pre-Amtrak) Florida
trains, as well as running passenger trains of its own.

The photo was taken in July, 1982. This stretch of track is now the RF&P Subdivision of CSX Transportation
and it now is home to long CSX freights, as well as passenger trains of Amtrak and the regional commuter
system, Virginia Railway Express.

Speaking of "fallen flags," the photo is from a Kodachrome-64 transparency; it makes its first appearance here.

Please smile back at the GP-40 ;-)
