The Tunnel at Harpers Ferry
In the golden sunshine of late afternoon, an eastbound CSX freight disappears into the tunnel at
Harpers Ferry, West Virginia after crossing over the Potomac River. It will emerge in Maryland at
Sandy Hook and continue eastward toward Brunswick and Point of Rocks, thence onward either
to Baltimore via the Old Main, or Washington via the Metropolitan Branch.
By the way, if the tunnel mouth seems “asymmetrical” as to the right-hand track, not so; for, while the thick late spring foliage is masking it, the Winchester Branch, also crossing the Potomac, but on a different bridge, converges with the high-speed mainline at this point (a bit of it can be seen through a break in the trees at far right).
By the way, anyone else here miss cabooses bringing up the ends of freight trains? ;-)
