VRE at Franconia-Springfield
A Virginia Railway Express Fredericksburg Line commuter train calls at Franconia-Springfield Station in
Fairfax County, Virginia, its Sumitomo bilevel Gallery IV coaches gleaming in the late day sunshine of a May afternoon.
The pedestrian bridge above the tracks connects to the mezzanine of the multimodal transportation center, which also serves the Blue Line trains of Washington's MetroRail rapid transit system, whose tracks run parallel to this CSX mainline for much of the distance toward Washington. The complex also serves regional and long-distance buses. The platform being served by this Spotsylvania-bound train is also accessible at ground level by neighborhood pathway.
VRE operates two routes from Washington's Union Station to communities in Virginia, the other being the Manassas Line, operating along Norfolk Southern tracks. Both lines use the same bilevel equipment, with trains hauled by MP-36PH-3C diesel-electric locomotives. (*) The trains are push-pull with control cabs at opposite end from locomotives.
